Marilene Hohmuth Lopes is associate Professor at Institute of Biomedical Sciences at University of São Paulo. Her research group pioneered studies of the prion protein-PrP function in the stem cells biology and brain cancer and demonstrated the engagement of PrP and a co-chaperone, STI1, as a promising target in anti-glioblastoma therapy. Her laboratory reported the importance of extracellular vesicles derived from stem cells, as a novel intercellular communication module during embryonic development. In fact, understanding the core of stem cell biology is imperative to elucidate glioblastoma evolution, since this tumor can represent an aberrant developing process based on stem cells.
